My 2018 Word of the Year & Goals

As 2017 came to a close, I spent time reflecting on how the year turned out, what I learned from it and how I wanted all the positive I got out of it to continue into 2018. Last year was a big year for me. I made significant changes and saw many positive results from those changes. Read my 2017 wrap up for more.

I know that some people only choose a word of the year, while others set goals. I did both last year and I want to do the same this year. I think my goals reflect my word choice and I feel like, in my own head, I need to have a few goals to work towards.

After consideration about both my word and my goals, I finally decided on a word: REINFORCE. I want to REINFORCE what I got out of 2017 and I think that my goals reflect that. Last year, for example, I simply wanted to exercise more. But this year, I want to REINFORCE what I got out of last year and improve my fitness. I have a few specific goals in this area. By working on specific goals, it forces me to take specific steps to achieve them.

My goals for 2018:

  • Run a 5K in 30 minutes or less
  • Go to boxing 3 times a week at minimum. Four is better, but not always easy to do, depending on my schedule. I try to do a workout at home when I can’t get there as frequently (like when we had a blizzard this week), and while it’s not the same, it’s something.
  • Strength train weekly
  • Get better at full push-ups. Push-ups on my knees have gotten easier so it’s time to step it up.
  • Do yoga 3 times per week
  • Work on my abs. I have to figure out what it is going to take to improve them. Although they’ve greatly improved and I can do exercises during the core part of boxing class that I’m downright giddy I can do after my back injury 3 years ago, they are still the area I’m not thrilled with. There’s a tropical vacation on the calendar this year, so I’ll be sporting a bathing suit for the first time in years.
  • Meditate daily. I have not been doing this as regularly as I was.
  • Blog once per week
  • Start an email list for the blog
  • Read 10 books. I like the idea of having a number in mind rather than just “read more.”

So there you have it—goals that REINFORCE what I got out of 2017. I want to grow this year and the only way to do that is to build upon all the good that came out of last year.

Do you set goals for the year? Do you choose a word? Let me know what you’ve decided to do and how you want to better yourself in 2018. It’s never too late to start working on YOU, even if you’ve always put everyone else first!
